The older I get, I am more intrigued by those clickbait sites that remind you how old you are, but how far you have come. Today’s clickbait was: How Much Did a House Cost the Year You Were Born?
A lot has changed in over 50 years, but I can say my wife and I have made some good investments in the homes we have owned. It is interesting to see how far apart the cost of living compared to the price of a new home has moved. The lot size has gotten smaller, but the square footage has gone up. As my mother-in-law says, invest in the land, because they are not making any more of it!
Looking back, the investment my wife and I have made in where we have lived has been worth every effort. We might not have the nicest, most modern of things, but what we have to show for it after all these years is worth way more than what we put into it. It all goes back to the foundation! I’m not talking about the concrete and block; I’m referring to the ethics and values we were taught and transferred into how we built our home. To have two wonderful adult children is well worth the chipped paint and worn-out floors today that we love to call our own! The spiritual foundation we established from the beginning has made all the difference!
I love how the author of Hebrews describes it in chapter 3 verse 4: For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
Home ownership is said to be the American Dream! We long to have a place to call our own, but what we build upon along the way makes the dream come true. The satisfaction comes not in the view from the roadside, but around the kitchen table! It doesn’t really matter what your house looks like from the outside, it is the condition of the foundation that will be the determining factor and true measure of value years from now.
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. Hebrews 3:1-6
