Taking A Trip AWAY

With the full summer travel schedule in play, many of us are heading out on the roads and airports to spend some time away! As my daughter reminds me, my favorite destination is AWAY!  So, as you head out, “away” from the routine, what’s the best way to prepare before you travel?  Reflecting this morning, I am reminded of my dad’s mother and her routine before going anywhere away from her home.  Maw Maw, as we call her, never had a driver’s license but never missed a church service or appointment.  To travel across town or the country, she was dependent on the faithfulness of friends or her feet!  It was always a joy to have her travel with me.  As soon as we got in the car we buckled up and she said a prayer.  Not because of my teenage driving or because she was scared, but because she was faithful.  Something I took for granted back then (and many times still do), she saw as the perfect time to give God glory and recognize His sovereignty over our life.

I came across a great article this morning by Cally Logan (7 Scriptures to Pray Before You Travel Anywhere) that explores a few Scripture verses that might help you focus before you go.  Here are the highlights:

1. Going and Coming: Psalm 121:8 "The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."

2. Holy Encounters: Hebrews 13:2 "Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!"

3. Everything to God’s Glory: 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

4. Angels All Around: Psalm 91:11 "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."

5. God Establishes Our Steps: Proverbs 16:9 "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."

6. God Is Over All Time: Psalm 31:15 "My times are in your hands."

7. God’s Protection: Psalm 91:4 "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."

It’s never a bad idea to begin any journey in life in prayer.  I’m sure you can add a lot more to this list, but these are a great start to get you thinking about the Lord before you head out on your next adventure AWAY!
