I love to run across articles that confirm the reality of the Created Order around us. Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands and Romans 1 tells us that the qualities of God are evident in what has been made and clearly seen. Passages like these come alive for me when I read about the animal kingdom and the order that has been observed by the scientists and researchers that have no spiritual goal to their discoveries, but confess to the presence of our Creator in their reports.
Did you know that rats show compassion to each other? Researchers have discovered that when they are placed in a situation where given the option to help a struggling neighbor or receive food, they normally help the friend in need. Another example, older orca whales guide younger pod members through specific hunting techniques such as coordinated wave-washing used to capture prey by rocking the ice and knocking seals into the waters below. Crows can recognize human faces and remember those faces long after a negative encounter. Basically, they hold a grudge for years and “pay back” those that have mistreated them. And we thought our significant other was the only ones capable of that.
Perhaps the most amazing example of God’s creative order in the animal kingdom is in elephants. Research suggests that they actually appear to address one another using distinct, name-like calls. Wild African elephants use specific low-frequency rumbles that seem to refer to particular individuals. What sets elephants apart from other vocal animals is how those calls function: Rather than simply imitating the recipient of the sound, the way dolphins or parrots do, the sounds appear to act as separate labels, similar to human names. There is something about hearing our own name. It’s even more fulfilling when you realize that God knows all of our names! I am reminded of several places in the Bible where this is confirmed. Jesus tells us in John 10:3 - “To him, the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” In the Old Testament Isaiah 45:3 tells us “I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the LORD, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel.” These are just few but they point us to the fact that God has built us for relationships, specifically a relationship with Him.
No matter how much the Lord loves His Creation, you and I are a special creation. He created us with an eternal soul. What this means is that there might be dogs in Heaven, but an eternal paradise was not created for them, but for those who would be called by His name! Only human beings are given this distinction and invitation in the Bible.
So take heart! You might be having a bad day, but know this, God KNOWS your name and He is working for you if you will simply listen for Him!
Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Luke 12:24-26
